Leak Detection Methods

Leak detection in transmission pipelines can be carried out using software-based, hardware-based, and biological approaches. Among the advanced technologies available, the Smart Ball stands out as a high-tech solution with unique capabilities:

  • Applicable to various pipe materials and diameters
  • Operable in different fluids, such as water, gas, and oil
  • Highly accurate leak localization (up to 3 meters)
  • Detection of leaks as small as 0.1 liters per minute
  • Simultaneous pipeline inspection without service interruption

Development of Smart Ball Technology in Iran

Smart Ball technology is currently accessible to only a limited number of countries worldwide. Fortunately, Iran has successfully localized this technology. The development of Smart Ball technology began approximately three years ago through Iranian expertise and private sector investment in the water industry.

Following the creation of initial prototypes, the Smart Ball underwent functional testing in a laboratory environment with transparent transmission pipes. Upon successful laboratory validation, the next step involved testing the technology in a semi-industrial pipeline. For this purpose, a 600-meter transmission line comprising various pipe materials was designed and constructed.

How the Smart Ball Works

The deployment process of the Smart Ball is as follows:

  1. During pipeline operation, the Smart Ball is introduced into the pipeline from the starting point using specialized equipment.
  2. As it moves through the pipeline, the device emits and receives specific frequency waves, storing critical data.
  3. At a predetermined point, the Smart Ball is retrieved from the pipeline using additional specialized tools.
  4. Collected data—such as flow rate, pipeline hydraulic conditions, and leak locations—are analyzed using dedicated software. The analysis provides:
    • Leak details, including volume and location
    • Hydraulic issues within the pipeline
    • A pipeline route map, including connection points and their positions
Deliverables

The results of the analysis are compiled into a comprehensive report, formatted to meet specific client requirements, and submitted to the client for action.

This process demonstrates the reliability and effectiveness of Smart Ball technology as a key solution for reducing water loss, enhancing operational efficiency, and maintaining the integrity of water transmission systems.
